I tried searching for hit songs for that period, shocked to discover almost all songs that hit in france are english song... All goos music seems to go unnoticed in France, you have to dive into shithole bars to find any decent rock, indie, jazz, punk, folk, or anything else. The music's out there, but the French will happily listen to SkyRock or NRJ and support the overrated crap.
